Säntis der Berg – the Säntis cable car project

The existing 50-year-old cable car up the Säntis mountain is set to be replaced with a state-of-the-art cable car. The new cable car will be safer and more reliable, as well as cheaper to operate and maintain.

Only minor structural modifications will be required at the Schwägalp valley station. The mountain station will be incorporated into the existing multi-purpose building on the Säntis but shifted 26 metres to the left. A key feature of the new, state-of-the-art cable car system is the use of an endlessly spliced cable (a cable that is a loop with no ends). This eliminates the need for carrier truck brakes, which can cause safety issues when triggered without good reason. In addition, an «integrated evacuation» system will be introduced to ensure that passengers can be returned to the stations quickly and safely at all times. This will eliminate the need for an additional mountain railway for this purpose (as was previously the case).

The new cable car will offer passengers a special experience, with panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows on the mountain side providing a breathtaking view of the Säntis mountain and the surrounding region.
