The Rhine Valley has the highest export rate in Europe and is considered a global market leader in various high-tech and high-quality sectors.
This success is attributable not only to the 2,080 companies employing around 53,000 skilled workers here but also to the high density of research and educational institutions in the field of precision engineering. Eastern Switzerland sets the bar nationally and internationally in the automotive industry and automotive supply, vehicle and mechanical engineering, photonics, and the plastics and textile industries.

As a highly industrialised region, Eastern Switzerland needs highly specialised and well-trained professionals, which is why it has established a wide range of training facilities. This has resulted in a broad network of educational and competence centres. These include the RhySearch research and innovation centre and Empa, the ETH Domain’s interdisciplinary research institute for materials science and technology. The StGallen BodenseeArea (SGBA) is an initiative of the canton of St.Gallen, the canton of Thurgau and both cantons of Appenzell to allow them to work together in this innovative region.
